Are you looking for a place to celebrate special events like birthdays or anniversaries, or just a long weekend trip to recharge and relax? Consider visiting the Eastern Shore of Maryland and staying at the Inn at Perry Cabin. This charming manor house resort and spa features beautiful gardens that reach down to the gentle waters feeding the Chesapeake Bay. Steeped in history, this colonial mansion is the perfect rural retreat.

1. Stunning Location

Inn at Perry Cabin is about an hour and half drive from the Washington, D.C. area, and located at the edge of Saint Michaels on Maryland’s beautiful Eastern Shore. Take time to relax in an Adirondack chair on the lawn and watch the boats cruise by.

2. Luxurious Accommodations

Inn at Perry Cabin has an intimate and exclusive feel with just 78 guest rooms and suites offering various configurations, many with fireplaces and separate living areas. The original inn became a hotel after the War of 1812. More rooms and spaces have been added since then in several additional buildings. If you are looking for a particular configuration, view, or room with a fireplace and balcony, I recommend reaching out to LBL Travel, so we can advise on the best room to suit your needs. Also, they are dog-friendly and have rooms with a little garden attached.

3. Gourmet Dining

Inn at Perry Cabin offers two main dining venues: Stars Restaurant and Purser’s Pub.

Stars Restaurant is the only four-diamond restaurant on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and you will enjoy eclectic fare accented by local ingredients. The restaurant has a picturesque waterfront view and features a seasonal three-course prix fixe dinner menu (see images below). You can add supplemental courses like the Taste of the Eastern Shore, Snakefish Head (a local invasive species), and a cheeseboard. Additionally, breakfast and lunch are served here.

Carrot Smith Island Cake (left) and Speculoos Lava Cake (right)

Purser’s Pub is a relaxed but elegant setting featuring a beautifully landscaped courtyard and a magnificent open-hearth fireplace, both ideal for pre-dinner cocktails or a nightcap. They have a stunning collection of rare whiskeys and bourbons. Additionally, they serve locally-inspired small plates with big flavors.

4. Fun Activities

One of the best activities at Inn at Perry Cabin is getting out on the water. There are multiple options: sailing, motorboat, kayaking, and paddle boards. We did a private sailboat excursion and had the best experience. The captain was very knowledgeable of the local area and waterways. If you are interested in learning to sail, they also offer a sailing academy. If you are feeling more active, you could play a game of tennis or hits the links designed by Pete Dye.

The town of St. Michaels lies within walk distance of the Inn. In the town you will discover intriguing antiques shops, museums, and galleries. Or, if you don’t want to walk, you can ride one of the Inn’s complimentary bikes.

Additional activity options include: take a self-guided garden tour, go bird watching (we saw an osprey nest on our sail), become an artist with a 2-hour workshop (sip and paint), decorate cookies, craft an Eastern Shore-inspired souvenir, attend a lecture about the Inn’s history, go on a guided history tour of St. Michaels, taste whiskey, attend “beer & bingo,” test your knowledge at trivia night, play lawn games, or try fitness classes. A calendar of activities is provide when you check-in. We recommend signing up early as space for some activities is limited.

Don’t forget to attend the 5 PM toast. Every evening the Inn sounds the riverside bell in true tradition of naval etiquette. Together, you celebrate the tradition of raising a glass of cheer to the flag “Don’t Give Up the Ship” — the battle cry of Commander Oliver Hazard Perry.

5. Get pampered at the spa or relax by the pool

To really unwind and relax, I recommend having a treatment at the spa. The spa offers a full range of services that focus on pampering, rejuvenation, and wellness. Options include a number of signature treatments, such as a clay and flower massage, and a Botanical Complex facial that draws on the healing benefits of plants and herbs. I recommend making spa reservations as soon as possible as availability is limited.

Another way to relax is by the heated horizon-edge swimming pool. It is located next to the spa, inside a brick-walled garden. Light snacks and refreshing cocktails are served poolside but only during the summer months. Please note the pool is seasonal.
